West Virginia (2021 - Ongoing)

During the making of Mawmaw, I spent most nights alone — driving between counties, sleeping in unfamiliar places, carrying the weight of the families I was photographing. For a stretch of that time, I slept on the pull-out couch of my 84-year-old friend Sonny, who had just lost his wife. We were good company for each other in that way that grief and solitude sometimes find each other. These are just a collection of photos that were part of the making and inbetween of Mawmaw: Sonny's grief, my waves of loneliness, the characters and places I passed through.
