Mawmaw

"Mawmaw is more than an assemblage of masterful images. Collectively, its subjects form a subject, an idea of family greater than any one family, and they make a moving argument about love’s indifference to circumstance and age."
— The New Yorker, Casey Cep
Mawmaw is a five-year photographic record of West Virginia's
grandfamilies — households where children are raised by their
grandparents. Made across all four seasons between 2021 and 2026, the
work moves past the familiar narratives of the opioid crisis to sit
with the fuller range of reasons a grandparent steps into a parent's
role: incarceration, death, unpreparedness, neglect.
